Historical Sorg Opera House Middletown, Ohio

sorg opera house

Its period fixtures, superior acoustics, and excellent sight lines attracted renowned artists from around the country. The open house gave the 150 visitors an opportunity to tour the Sorg, including the balcony, dressing rooms under the stage and its commercial building. The original Sorg Opera House sign that recently was uncovered was displayed in the lobby. Five years ago, the Sorg was named to the 2016 list of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites, a designation the non-profit organization SORG hoped would help raise money for the building’s rebirth. The Puppy Pals LIVE Comedic Stunt Dog Show is a hilarious presentation for the whole family and the dog lover in all of us, and this special fun-filled spectacle stars mostly rescued dogs. From shelters to showbiz, these pooches perform spectacular stunts and breathtaking feats.

Reviving The Sorg Opera House Theatre

Check out Middletown’s daily activities, or spend the day shopping at unique, locally owned retail shops just a few streets over. Since then, the opera house, constructed in 1890 and designed by architect Samuel Hannaford, who also designed the nearby Sorg Mansion, has experienced major renovations. Once considered another empty historic building in downtown Middletown, the Sorg Opera House has been rejuvenated, survived the coronavirus pandemic and is flourishing, said Nancy Griffith, board president of the Sorg Opera Revitalization Group (SORG).

Count Down to Start Up (1970) follows the start-up process of ARMCO’s first fully automatic cold strip steel mill in Middletown. Their vision was to restore the building back to a beautiful and thriving theatre; filling the grand ballroom with patrons, entertainers, educators, and employees. The photo below is a postcard picture of  The Talkies debut  in 1929 at The Sorg Opera House on Main Street. Ami Vitori, owner of Gracie’s, a downtown restaurant, said when there are weekend shows at the Sorg business increases tremendously. Visitors will also learn about the current ongoing restoration work on the theater, what SORG has accomplished so far, upcoming shows, and how they can help with future restoration efforts. Art Central Foundation is pleased to welcome the incomparable Rubi Girls to the stage of the historic Sorg Opera House for our annual Drag Me to Brunch fundraiser this year! We anticipate a big crowd for this one, so brunch will be an add-on ticket to the show with limited availability and will be held at Art Central Foundation's event space. The Rubi Girls will be performing a PG13 show for us, just like the movies, so content is appropriate for those 13 and over if accompanied by a parent. Whether he’s tackling the issues of race and activism in America today or confronting his past with stories of family, relationships, wrestling, and more, this is pure Tyrus at his unbridled best. The parallels he draws between current culture and his personal past are insightful, provocative, and profound.

Sample six delicious cupcakes and six inspired, hand-crafted cocktails. This performance is made possible in part by generous donations from the Middletown Community Foundation. Free parking behind the building off of Broad Street and off of First Street. The admission fee for the tour is whatever you would like to donate to the Sorg Opera Revitalization Group; the suggested donation is $10 per person. Information on how to donate, volunteer with SORG and attend future shows will be provided during the tour.

This historical gem not only has the history of more than 100 years of plays, acts, and standing ovations living inside its walls... But it also contains the legacy of those who have restored it back to it’s amazing glory. “That’s why we want to save these old theaters— to be able to step back into an era, with all the details, the glitz, the sight lines and the acoustics...

Griffith said the Sorg is important to the community because it provides local theater enthusiasts an opportunity to see local productions and it’s an economic driver for downtown businesses. There are 17 musical shows scheduled for the rest of the year and seven so far in 2022. Puppy Pals is a nationally touring family fun, action-packed show where adopted and rescued dogs perform spectacular stunts and breathtaking feats onstage before your very eyes! Watch spellbound as we lead the puppies and audience through challenging and comical tricks, as the pooches show everyone who is really boss!

They were successful, and ran the theater until 2010, when a water main break forced the opera house to close again. In 2012, the Sorg Opera Revitalization Group (SORG) formed to buy and reopen the building. Ricky Nelson, the original "teen idol," remains a chart topper and trail blazer to this day! The multi-talented Nelson starred along side his family in the TV series The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet, co-starred with John Wayne and Dean Martin in Rio Bravo, and placed a whopping 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, a new feature at the time. His single "Poor Little Fool" is considered to be the first number one song on the chart. After 19 more top ten hits, he was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987 and is ranked #49 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars Of All Time.

In 1901, The Sorg began showing early forms of motion pictures, such as photo plays, and vaudeville performances before the operas. The live shows were discontinued in the late 1920s, and in the summer of 1929 a sound system was installed, turning the Sorg into a full time movie theater. Soon after, the Friends of the Sorg group was formed to reopen it as a live performance venue.

Since this celebration, The Sorg has continued to fill its theatre with a variety of performances and shows. Middletown’s first multi-millionaire, Paul J. Sorg, had the opera house built as a gift to his hometown. Samuel Hannaford, who designed the Cincinnati Music Hall, was hired to design the 1,200-seat opera house. The historic Sorg Opera House is located in the heart of revitalized downtown Middletown.

His twin sons, multi-platinum recording artists Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, return to relive the music and memories with their multimedia event Ricky Nelson Remembered. Main Street USA (1963), shot principally in Middletown, the film shows how advancements in steel technology revolutionized the steel industry and improved everyday lives. Every ARMCO employee in the country was given the opportunity to watch the movie on company time. The Sorg Opera House Theatre recently underwent an incredible renovation, bringing this grand building full of history back to life. Guests can enjoy a variety of shows and events at a venue that holds great significance in the history of theater.

I think it’s for the next generation to be able to come in and see this kind of stuff," Chuck Miller, SORG President, told the Cincinnati Business Courier. In January 1935, a fire caused $10,000 worth of damage— which would have been $185,298 today— which caused The Sorg to close for several months. The Sorg closed again for a remodel in the late 1940s and a false ceiling was added, separating the upper balcony from the the rest of the theater to improve the sound. A historical gem with 100+ years of performances and standing ovations.

ThunderBeard is the ultimate ZZ Top tribute band that authentically recreates the live experience of the legendary band. ThunderBeard will have you singing along to classic hits such as “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Sharp Dressed Man” as well as many other classics from throughout the band’s 50+ year history. With musicianship and showmanship that rivals the original (and, of course, Fuzzy guitars!), ThunderBeard delivers an unforgettable live show that will have you feeling like you’ve been transported back to the heyday of one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Join us at the historic Sorg Opera House for our first Local Music Showcase, featuring three of the area's best rock bands for just $10! Known throughout Ohio as The Rubi Girls, this dynamic, close-knit troupe of professionals has been performing since the late 1980’s. Comprised of business owners, a filmmaker, a graphic designer, an IT director, a merchandise manager, a make-up artist, cosmetologists, hairstylists, and educators, the group began performing for one another in an attic during college. What started on Rubicon Street has grown into a frenzy for seating arrangements upon the announcement of a show. Romance of Iron and Steel (1938), documents ARMCO’s innovative rolling mill process.
